Vracar Tour – Sightseeing tour of Vracar, and visit to Temple of Saint Sava.
The most dominant feature of modern Vračar is the massive Temple of Saint Sava. Its decades long, troubled construction shaped not only the present appearance of the plateau but also the entire skyline of Belgrade. The plateau has been reshaped in the early 2000s, with fountains, marble access roads to the temple with pillars, and playgrounds added, while the already existing monument to the leader of the First Serbian Uprising, Karađorđe, was erected on a low, artificial hillock. The plateau is also the location of the National Library of Serbia and Karađorđev Park begins here, with the craftsmen settlement of Gradić Pejton and the bohemian quarter of Čubura nearby. Vračar is a residential and very important commercial part of Belgrade. The tall skyscraper in downtown Belgrade, the Beograđanka, Cvetni Trg (famous for its flower shops) and the square of Slavija occupy the western section of the municipality.
St. Sava’s Temple is the biggest church on the Balkans Peninsula (built over the area of 3500 m2, 67.5m hign, can admit almost 12000 people). Athought it is not finished yet, it looks monumental and very attractive. It is erected close to Slavija, on the place of the highest altitude in Belgrade, called Svetosavski plateau. Its huge dome, with the gold-plated cross, can be seen from many places in the city. It looks particlary attractive when you look along Terazije, towards Slavija. Building of this Temple is a significant undertaking of civil engineering, since, for example, the dome of 4000 tons was raised in one piece to the height of m above the ground, The 12 m cross on the top of the dome is coverd with gold. In the neighborhood of the Temple is the older St. Sava’s Church.
Walking trhoungh the city, you will probably come to St. Marco’s Church in Boulevard of the Revolution. It has the look of the famous Serbian medieval Gracanica monastery, but it is much bigger. Right behind this Church is the Russian Orthodox Church or The Holly Trinity Church.
